Alleviate Chronic Lower Back Pain

Experience relief from chronic lower back pain with The Intracept Procedure at Source Healthcare. This minimally invasive therapy targets the basivertebral nerve within the vertebral body to provide effective relief from vertebrogenic back pain.

What is Vertebrogenic Pain?

Vertebrogenic pain is a specific type of chronic lower back pain that originates from the vertebral body and is often described as a deep, aching discomfort in the low back made worse by physical activities such as prolonged sitting, bending forward, and lifting1.  Pain results from damage to the vertebral endplates, which can occur from degenerative changes as well as injuries to the spine.  This condition significantly impacts a patient’s daily activities and quality of life.

What is The Intracept Procedure?

The Intracept Procedure is the only FDA-approved treatment for chronic vertebrogenic low back pain.

It is an outpatient procedure that involves a small incision through which a specialized probe is advanced under image guidance into the vertebral body to ablate the basivertebral nerve, thereby interrupting transmission of pain signals.  Unlike traditional neural ablation targets, the basivertebral nerve is an unmyelinated nerve, meaning that the nerve does not regenerate once destroyed.  The Intracept Procedure thus provides long-lasting relief from vertebrogenic back pain.

Advantages of the Intracept Procedure:

  • Long-lasting pain relief 2
  • Minimally invasive
  • Short recovery time
  • Effective for patients unresponsive to conventional low back pain treatments (facet joint injections, medial branch rhizotomies, epidural steroid injections)
  • Reduces reliance on pain medications including opioids
  • Implant-free (preserves spinal architecture as well as future treatment options for other spine conditions)
  • Only FDA-approved therapy for treatment of chronic vertebrogenic low back pain

The Intracept Procedure: What to Expect

Consultation and Evaluation

During your initial consultation, your pain specialist will conduct a thorough evaluation of your pain that includes a review of your medical history, a physical examination, and MRI studies to confirm the diagnosis of vertebrogenic pain.

The Intracept Procedure

On the day of the procedure, you will receive sedation to ensure your comfort and safety. A small (3-5mm) incision is made in your lower back through which a specialized probe is advanced under multiplanar imaging guidance and positioned precisely to target the basivertebral nerve within the vertebral body. Once optimal positioning has been confirmed, the probe is heated to ablate the basivertebral nerve. The entire process usually takes about an hour.

Enduring Pain Relief

After The Intracept Procedure, you may experience mild soreness at the incision site that typically resolves within a few days.  The recovery period is generally short, with most patients resuming normal activities within a week.  Pain relief often begins within a few weeks, and many patients report sustained pain reduction for years2.
